Running
Frogs
Kassina spp
Natural habitat
Running frogs
hail from Africa
and reach around
6-8cm in body
length.
They are semi-arboreal
which means that
they like to
spend some of
their time climbing
and so suitable
décor
should be supplied
to allow them
to do this. They
are primarily
nocturnal in
habit. They have
a robust disposition
but their shyness
during daylight
hours means that
they should be
considered by
people with a
little experience
in keeping frogs,
toads or other
amphibians.
Terrarium
Due to the activity
of these frogs
the terrarium
should be larger
than one might
expect: A terrarium
of 60x30x40 is
should cope very
well for a couple
or 3 individuals
in the long term.
High plants should
be provided (natural
or artificial),
because these
frogs enjoy climbing.
It is also important
to provide hiding-places
(caves, thickets
of plants, roots,
bark because
these animals
need to hide
during the day.
A small water
bowl is useful
to maintain the
humidity, and
the frogs will
bathe there from
time to time.
These are messy
frogs and so
the water bowl
should be cleaned
and refilled
regularly. The
terrarium must
have a fitted
mesh on the lid,
if not it will
saturate with
moisture, and
the air will
not be able to
circulate. Hot,
moist air can
lead to infections.
90% humidity
is about right.
NOTE! Kassina
spp are superbly
adept escapologists-
don’t presume
they cannot escape
without checking
everywhere first.
Lighting
A light is unnecessary
as these are
nocturnal animals.
A night light
/ LED moonlight
may assist
in the observation
of these animals.
Temperature
Maintaining a
constant temperature
of 24-25C is
ok for this
species although
some populations
may experience
nightly drops
in temperature
(to around
21C) that can
be simulated
if you wish.
Food
Variety is very
important with
any animal’s
diet and these
frogs will
accept practically
any insect
or similar
that will fit
inside their
mouths. Gut
loaded crickets,
locusts, fruit
flies and various
grubs will
be accepted
readily but
none should
be fed exclusively.
Care Sheets
are meant as
a Guide to husbandry
only. You should
always undertake
further research
about how to
care for this
animal properly.
